How to get around China.
China is a huge country, with things that look close on a map often hours apart in reality.
Because of that, it's important to take advantage of the various travel options to make the most of any trip.
So, here's most of what you'll need to get around this huge country.
China has a vast network of airports - with even 'small' towns being connected to their provincial capitals by a flight every couple of days.
This makes it quite convenient to use flights almost like long distance buses
For the few places that aren't connected by flights, or for shorter internal journeys within provinces, China has a massive train system - including tonnes of high speed rail services that'll be just as fast as a flight even for slightly longer journeys.
Theyre generally comfortable, but just remember that these train stations operate a bit like airports - so you'll need to be at the train station about 40 minutes before it departs to make sure you're able to catch it.
For both train and flight tickets - the easiest way to check schedules and book tickets would be on the trip.com app.
For a lot of trips, the easiest way would be to rent a car and drive yourself.
Renting a car in China is relatively cheap and can be done right from the app.
Apps to look at when considering car rental:
trip - trip.com
ehicar - https://en.1hai.cn/
Unfortunately, you will need a Chinese license to be able to drive in China as the country hasn't signed up for the International Driver's Permit.
You can apply for a temporary driver's license that is valid for 3 months at Beijing Airport, as well as multiple rental spots in Shanghai and other places.
I will not pretend to be an expert in the matter so I suggest doing some research to make sure your driver's license will be accepted, but in general the documents you'll need would be:
passport
driving license
official translations of both
