The Ngātoroirangi Mine Bay Māori Rock Carvings are one of the most iconic sights on Lake Taupo, showcasing Māori culture and history. It was created in the 1970s, with it depicting important figures like Ngātoroirangi, a chief who guided Māori to Lake Taupo. You must be aware that these impressive carvings are only accessible by boat as it is perched on a cliff above the water. Lake Taupo itself is huge, about the size of Singapore, and was formed by a massive volcanic eruption 26,000 years ago.

To see the carvings, you can take a boat tour, with prices ranging from $50 to $120. I personally went with Sail Barbary Eco Sailing for $39 (on the app BookMe), which was a laid-back and eco-friendly way to experience the lake. On hot days, you'll see people diving in for a swim by the carvings, it's really iconic. Check online for deals and don't skip this beautiful carving.
