If you’re looking for a thrilling hike in the Blue Mountains, the Porters Pass Track and Colliers Causeway is a must-do. This 4.2-kilometer loop takes about 3 hours and serves up a variety of landscapes, from lush fields and rugged cliffs to stunning waterfalls.
Start at the end of Burton Road in Blackheath and take the trail counter-clockwise. Your first stop is Lambert’s Lookout, followed by a journey through Porters Pass. The trail then narrows as you navigate Colliers Causeway, with towering sandstone cliffs on your left and a dramatic drop-off on your right. Keep an eye out for handprints on the rocks as you go.
As you descend, the environment cools and becomes denser. You’ll pass Slippery Dip Falls, beautiful and perfect for photos. Be cautious as you climb up beside the falls to reach the Centennial Glen Grotto. The name says it all; it’s quite slippery, so hang onto the rails. Follow the sign towards the ‘Canyon’. Once you get to the grotto, drop your things on a rock and explore. The grotto features a shallow round pool and a deep pool encircled by a massive tree. The deep pool is icy, but you’ve come this far, so don’t miss the plunge!
After a refreshing dip and some great photos, head back to the T-section and follow the sign toward Centennial Glen. The trail continues past more cliff faces and is a prime spot for rock climbers, entertaining to watch if you’re lucky enough to see them. The path eventually leads you to Fort Rock at the top of the valley. From here, the trail is relatively flat and more exposed as you’re above the cliff tops. I loved this walk for how diverse the terrain was allowing me to take in so much breathtaking scenery.
