Purnululu National Park, nestled in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, holds UNESCO World Heritage status thanks to its stunning Bungle Bungle Range. These 350-million-year-old striped sandstone domes are an awe-inspiring sight whether you view them from the ground or the air. While I didn't have the chance to explore this national park myself, I can't help but recommend it and mark it on my map for future adventures. It's definitely a must-visit for anyone with a 4WD, and it's high on my own bucket list.
But if you, like me, are exploring Australia in a 2WD, don't click away just yet—there's still a way to experience the ancient creek beds, stunning gorges, and unique rock formations from above. Seasonal helicopter and plane tours offer a bird's-eye view of these remarkable landscapes. Though they can be pricey, as a budget traveler, I've always had them on my wishlist. Unfortunately, these tours operate only from May to August, and I visited in September, missing out this time.
If you have the opportunity and means to visit this destination, seize it! I'm certain you'll embark on an adventure filled with natural marvels and breathtaking scenery. And who knows? One day in the future, I'll join you in experiencing the wonder firsthand, leaving my jealousy behind.
