Possibly Australia's cutest animals, quokkas are a major draw on Rottnest Island, and encountering them was undoubtedly the highlight of my trip. These adorable marsupials are ubiquitous and their friendly curiosity is simply infectious. With a population exceeding 10,000 on the island, your best chance to see them is around the Settlement, the main town area, where they often gather hoping for treats (though it's important not to feed or touch them). However, I was delighted to spot at least 10 quokkas in scattered parts of the island beyond the Settlement.
Now, let's talk about the famous Quokka selfie—it's trickier than it looks to snap the perfect pic with these wild creatures. Remember, it's best to let them approach you and maintain a respectful distance. One tip I found useful was to turn my phone upside down to capture their adorable smiling mouths.
During my stay, I couldn't resist taking plenty of selfies with these photogenic creatures, but the true joy was simply observing them in their natural habitat. For anyone visiting Rottnest, meeting the quokkas is an absolute highlight.
