Driving across the Nullarbor Plain is basically a right of passage for anyone doing a lap of the country, it's pretty iconic. Connecting Western Australia to South Australia the Nullabour is one of those jaw-dropping places that truly showcases Australia’s wild side. Stretching along the Great Australian Bight coast, this flat, treeless expanse of limestone bedrock spans around 200,000 square kilometers and is as remote as it gets. Picture endless horizons with a desert climate that brings scorching hot summers, freezing winters, and hardly any rain. It’s the ultimate test of endurance for any road tripper.
One of the iconic parts of this journey and area is the 90 90-mile straight, which, as the name suggests, is a straight stretch of road that seems to go on forever. It’s one of the longest straight roads in the world, and driving it feels like you’re cruising through an endless, surreal landscape. The Nullarbor is also known for its stunning karst formations, extensive cave systems, and some fascinating meteorite deposits scattered throughout.
As you drive through this vast and rugged terrain, you’ll be connecting with Australia’s raw, untamed beauty. The Nullarbor has a rich history with Indigenous Australians and has been a point of intrigue for European explorers since the 1600s. Good luck on this drive, it's a long one, so make sure you take plenty of breaks and stay alert for your safety and for wildlife.
