When you’re exploring the Flinders Ranges, the Rawnsley Bluff hike is an absolute must-do. Trust me, it’s one of my top 10 favorite hikes in all of Australia, and for good reason! Standing at an elevation of 943 meters, this bluff forms part of Wilpena Pound and connects the eastern and western mountain ranges of the area. This 13.4-kilometer round-trip adventure will lead you up to one of the most spectacular viewpoints in the region. As you ascend, you’ll be treated to some seriously impressive scenery, with panoramic vistas of the Flinders Ranges stretching out before you.
The hike starts off with a relatively gentle incline but soon ramps up, offering a mix of rocky paths and steep sections that make it a bit of a challenge. The trail is well-marked, but make sure you bring plenty of water and wear sturdy hiking boots to handle the rocky terrain. But don’t let that intimidate you, every step is worth it when you reach the summit. The views from Rawnsley Bluff are absolutely breathtaking, showcasing the rugged beauty of the ranges and the sprawling landscapes below.
When you’re at the summit, look for signs to the Wilpena Pound Lookout. It adds about a kilometer to your hike, but since you’re up there, you might as well add it to the adventure. It’s the perfect spot to catch your breath, soak in the scenery, and snap some awe-inspiring photos.
