Standley Chasm stands as a testament to the raw beauty and geological wonders of the outback. The natural marvel is renowned for its towering cliffs of vibrant red rock, which soar upwards to heights of over 80 meters, creating a narrow chasm that slices through the ancient landscape. But Standley Chasm's allure goes beyond its striking appearance, it's also a place of cultural significance for the local Arrernte people, who have inhabited this land for thousands of years. According to Aboriginal legend, the chasm was formed by the powerful forces of an ancestral caterpillar named Ulpma, whose movements sculpted the land into the stunning formation we see today.
To access the chasm it is a $10 entry. There is a well-maintained path which is a 1.2 km return walk is a grade 1 path and is wheelchair accessible. The path to Standley Chasm winds through a stunning ravine, flanked by native gumtrees and a dry creek bed. As you near the chasm, standing tall at 80 meters with a narrowest point of just three meters wide, the scene becomes truly mesmerizing. The best time to visit is at noon, when the overhead sun casts a rich red glow, perfect for capturing stunning photos. However, to avoid the crowds, consider arriving early, as the gate opens at 8 am.
