Carnarvon Gorge is an extraordinary destination that showcases the beauty of Queensland’s rugged outback. Located about a seven-hour drive northwest of Brisbane, this national park is a treasure trove of natural wonders, from dramatic gorges to ancient rock art. The park offers a range of trails and activities, making it perfect for a nature-filled escape.
One of the highlights of Carnarvon Gorge is the variety of hiking trails available. The main trail, the Carnarvon Gorge Walking Track, is a 16.5-kilometer return walk that takes you through lush rainforest, past towering cliffs, and along the serene Carnarvon Creek. This trail offers stunning views, including the famous Moss Garden and the impressive Cathedral Cave with its Aboriginal rock art. For a shorter hike, the Boolimba Bluff Trail, at 4.4 kilometers return, provides panoramic views of the gorge and is a must-do for its breathtaking views.
Camping in Carnarvon Gorge is a fantastic way to fully immerse yourself in the park’s beauty. The park has several camping areas, including the main Takaraka Bush Resort and the more basic Carnarvon Gorge Campground. While exploring the park, don’t miss the chance to visit the Rock Pool, a popular spot for a refreshing dip in crystal-clear waters. And keep your eyes peeled for the elusive platypus; dawn and dusk are the best times to spot these fascinating creatures in the creek.
