Mount Bartle Frere is one of my favorite hikes in Australia, it was the first overnight hike that I ever did and it will always stand out as a core memory from my Aus lap. If you’re up for a challenge, I can’t recommend it enough. As Queensland’s highest peak at a staggering 1,611 meters, it stands as a majestic mountain, promising a climb that’s both grueling and rewarding. The trail is a 15km journey that takes 5 - 7 hours. Before climbing this mountain I researched and saw the trail described as “soul-crushing but rewarding ” and that is the perfect way to put it.

I opted to break the hike into two days, camping at the summit, which meant carrying a heavy pack, a challenge in itself. The ascent took me about 5 hours, with plenty of breaks and even a refreshing swim in one of the creek crossings. Many hikers do it in a single day if you start early, but splitting it up allowed me to savor the summit views without feeling rushed. The steep terrain demands stamina and resilience, and the ever-changing weather adds an extra layer of excitement.

The panoramic views from the top are incredible, though the summit itself is partially obscured by trees. Be sure to enjoy the sweeping views of the coastal lowlands and the Atherton Tablelands on the way up. The sunset from the campsite was one of the highlights of my Australian adventure. With its diverse flora and unique wildlife, including the elusive Bartle Frere skink, this hike immerses you in the wild splendor of Queensland's Wooroonooran National Park. It’s not just a climb; it’s a deep dive into the heart of Australia’s tropical rainforest.
