The Big Drift sand dunes in Wilsons Promontory National Park are an absolute must-visit for nature lovers and adventure seekers. These massive inland dunes offer a stunning, desert-like landscape surrounded by lush bushland, providing a unique contrast to the park’s usual scenery. The walk to the dunes is about 4 kilometers round-trip and is relatively easy, making it accessible for most hikers. However, the climb onto the dunes can be a bit challenging, as the shifting sand can turn it into a bit of a workout. Trust me, though, the effort is definitely worth it.
Once you reach the top, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views that are especially magical at sunset. The sweeping sand dunes create a surreal setting perfect for amazing photo ops and unforgettable stargazing. The open space and lack of light pollution offer some truly spectacular night skies. I visited at sunset hoping for a colorful sky, but it was pretty overcast. Still, it was a fun and cool spot to explore. Don’t forget to pack your camera to capture the unique landscape and bring some warm layers, as it can get chilly and windy, especially in the evening.
