Melidoni Cave, also known as Gerontospilios, is located about 28 km from Rethymno Town at an elevation of 220 meters. It is situated in the village of Melidoni, named after Antonios Melidonis, a hero of the Greek War of Independence against the Turks.

The cave is historically significant for its tragic role during the revolution. In 1824, 370 unarmed inhabitants sought refuge inside the cave to escape the advancing Ottoman forces. However, the entrance was sealed, and the cave was set on fire by the Turks, causing all the inhabitants to suffocate. In 1834, Manolis Kirimizakis, the sole survivor of the event, explored the cave and discovered the bones of the victims. These bones are now preserved in a large sarcophagus within the cave, and a small chapel has been built at the entrance to honor their memory.

In Greek mythology, the cave is also linked to the giant Talos, who was given to King Minos by Zeus to protect Crete. Various Neolithic artifacts have been found inside the cave, and many of them are now on display in the Archaeological Museum of Rethymno. During the Minoan period, the cave is believed to have been a place of worship for an ancient goddess.

The cave features several captivating rooms. The first, known as the Room of Heroes, contains a complex of stalagmites called Mnimion, which is thought to be a monument. Further inside, visitors will find the Pashley Room, which is filled with impressive stalagmites and stalactites. The cave also contains other fascinating chambers, including the Room of the Rocks, the Chamber of Katavothra, and Iperoon, each of which offers an awe-inspiring atmosphere with unique rock formations. The final room, known as the Chamber of Curtains, is beautifully decorated with stunning stalagmites and stalactites.
