[Permits required - Lake O'Hara backcountry]
Lake O'Hara is a stunning alpine lake in Yoho NP and easily our favourite backcountry area in Canadian Rockies. The access is restricted by permits to preserve its delicate environment, which means it's never crowded and that's what makes it so special.
The area offers scenic network of trails, including Opabin Plateau viewpoint (on the first photo), Lake Oesa or Lake McArthur.
To visit, you either have to:
1) Obtain the day bus permits or camping permits, which are extremely competitive.
2) Stay at Lake O'Hara Lodge
3) Hike the access road which is closed to private vehicles - 11 km one way
Getting to O'Hara surely isn't the easiest task, but if you can make it - it'll be one of the best experiences of your life.
PS: Make sure to get a carrot cake at the day shelter - it's the best one you can get in Rockies!
