Seiryō-ji is a beautiful Buddhist temple which is also one of the oldest in whole Kyoto. Founded in the 8th century by Kōbō Daishi, the founder of Shingon Buddhism.
The temple is famous for its Shaka Nyorai statue, a seated Buddha image believed to have been carved by Kōbō Daishi himself. The statue is made of wood and is said to be over 1,200 years old.
The temple is also home to a number of other important Buddhist artifacts, including a sutra that is said to have been written by Kōbō Daishi and a bell that is said to have been cast by him.
It is a peaceful and tranquil place that never gets too crowded and is often overlooked by tourists.
