Togetsukyo Bridge is one of the most iconic and picturesque sites in Kyoto. Spanning 155 meters across the scenic Katsura River, Togetsukyo offers breathtaking views, especially when surrounded by cherry blossoms or fiery red maple leaves.
The bridge's name literally means "moon crossing". The legend is said to have originated in the Kamakura period (1185-1333). One night, Emperor Kameyama was boating on the Katsura River when he saw the moon reflected in the water. The moon was so bright that it seemed to be crossing the bridge. The emperor was so impressed by the sight that he named the bridge Togetsukyo.
The legend is still popular today, and many people believe that if you see the moon crossing the bridge, you will be granted a wish.
And there is another version of the legend:
Once upon a time, there was a beautiful princess who lived in a castle by the Katsura River. One night, the princess was walking along the river when she saw the moon reflected in the water. The moon was so beautiful that the princess decided to climb to the top of the bridge to get a better look. As she was standing on the bridge, the moon began to cross the sky. The princess was so amazed by the sight that she wished that she could stay there forever. Her wish came true, and she became the moon goddess.
