5040 Peak via Cobalt Lake Trail is a challenging but rewarding hike near Macoah (Located between Port Alberni and Ucluelet/Tofino). The trail is relentlessly steep and technical with some scrambling, lots of roots, rocks, and some rope sections.
The views from the summit are absolutely stunning, especially of Triple Peak and the surrounding mountains and islands.
Overnight backpacking and camping is a popular option here. Free camping spots are at Cobalt Lake, near the Alpine Hut or on the ridge/5040 peak (no reservations or permits required).
Or you can book the ACC 5040 Alpine Hut (book early!).
Bear cache, toilets and water sources located near lake and hut.
Mosquitos, wasps and flies are terrible in the summer months! Bring bug spray and a mosquito net.
The trailhead is 9 km down a very rough logging road. A 4x4 vehicle with high clearance is needed.
Overall, it's a tough hike, but totally worth it for the incredible scenery and sense of accomplishment at the top.
When exploring the outdoors, make sure to follow all 7 Leave No Trace Principles!
As with any long/overnight hike, make sure to properly research the trail so that you are properly prepared with the right gear and are aware of current trail conditions.
