The Reynisfjarra Black Beach is probably the best known beach in Iceland. It impresses with its black sand, basalt formations and strong waves.

When talking about strong waves I want to express a warning at this point. The strength of the waves on this side of Iceland are NO JOKE. Every year people from all over the world are dying because they ignore the warnings standing everywhere around the beach. Sneaker waves can come without a warning and drag people into the sea. When ending up in the water there is no way out. The beach is like a cliff. What we cannot see when strolling around is that after some meters in the water is a cliff which produces together with the stream a gravity head that there is no chance to escape. EVEN OLYMPIC SWIMMERS WOULD HAVE NO CHANCE.

BUT: This is one of the most magical places of the Island. So take care and enjoy this place. Always keep a safe distance of the water when strolling around. The black sand makes this beach to something very special. The cliffs on the side are natural formed basalt column. I still cannot understand what an artist nature can be. Basalt columns impress with their natural six edges that appear due to the temperature and pressure during the solidification of lava.
