An Austrian friend showed Rauðaskál cater to me. I was not aware of its existence before that even though I have been passing it many, many times during our highland horse riding trips without noticing it.

Better known as “Apple Crater” Rauðaskál is a crater close to my favorite mountain the active volcano Hekla. You can reach the crater with a 4WD car. The drive is quite adventurous like most highland drives in that area. Take your time and a good car will bring you to your destination. A small path leads up the crater. This path is short and not difficult to hike but you should still don‘t underestimate it. On top of the crater you will be amazed by the colors: green, red and black. A perfect mix. From there you also have the perfect view on the Queen of Iceland: Hekla.

Note: You will quite likely receive a message that informs you that you are close to an active volcano. Hekla is very powerful and therefore it is important to respect the messages you get. This first message is usually a warning which tells you to be aware of the place you are at. Always have your phone with you in that area so the government can reach you if Hekla shows activity. It is important to follow the demands of the civil protection service.
