Landmannahellir is a campsite located in South Iceland close to Landmannalaugar. You can rent mountain huts or built your tend in between the beautiful mountains of this area. The dominant colors red, green, black, and white give a very special atmosphere. Many Icelandic horse groups use this place as accommodation as it offers paddocks, hay and water for horses.

In the old days Landmannahellir was used by sheep farmers of the region. Also nowadays sheep farmers use this place to gather their sheep in autumn. The word Landmannahellir which means translated “the land mens cave” describes that there must be a cave at this place. That is true! The cave is on the right side of the camping site and can be visited. The story says that in the earlier days, when there were no huts at this place sheep farmers with up to 70 horses slept in this cave. To be honest … I am not sure of that. I suppose they wrote a 0 too much. But it is true that some years ago when the farmers came to gather their seep they were surprised by incredibly bad weather. They used the cave to keep their sheep and come back after some days to pick them up.

The accommodation today is a little bit more luxurious. But not a lot. I still love to stay at this place.

The huts have different sizes. All are sleeping bag accommodations. The bigger huts have a bathroom with a toilet but there is no electricity. Like on many camp sites this one offers a toilet house with showers. You can shower there cold for free. I am not easily cold but still I would not recommend to try it. A shower ticket for 600ISK offers 10 minutes of warm water. And it is also possible to built up your tent or sleep in a car.

You can check out the prices in the link.
