All colors you can imagine: red, orange, pink, blue, green, yellow. This highland area is going to take your breath.
Landmannalaugar originated during eruptions in the 15th century. The chemistry of the stone and ash that has been formed during these eruptions is determining the colors we see today. But the extraordinary colors of the mountains are only one highlight in this area.
At the main campsite in Landmannalaugar you can take a bath in a natural hot spring which has been used for already hundreds of years. So don’t forget your swimsuit and towel!
The best way to explore Landmannalaugar is by hiking the innumerable hiking paths. They appear in different levels which gives almost everyone the opportunity to find the right hike for your energy level and wishes.
I would recommend to bring your own food. There is a so called “Mountain Mall“ at the campsite where you can buy everything that is necessary to survive but I think it is best to not count with buying all your food there. Nonetheless, I recommend to check out the Mountain Mall as it is a unique concept in the middle of nowhere. Three American school buses accommodate a mini-supermarket, snack bar with snacks like hot dogs and sandwiches etc., and a lounge.
How to reach Landmannalaugar: The probably easiest and most common way to reach Landmannalaugar is by car. You will need a 4WD! The road is a real highland road and a real adventure if you are not used to drive roads like this. But also here I recommend taking your time and a good 4WD car will bring you to your final destination. There are three roads to reach Landmannalaugar:
F26/F208: This is the road I prefer if I am driving myself to Landmannalaugar. The reason is that there are no big river crossings on that way. I was driving that road with my Suzuki Jimney and it was no problem for this small but strong car to bring us safely to Landmannalaugar. The drive will take you about 1 1/2 hours but this also depends on how comfortable you feel in driving this road and how often you are going to stop on your way to explore some nature wonders.
F225: This route includes several river crossings which means you will need a higher 4WD car. This road starts close to mount Hekla. I have been driving this road several times as it also leads to the camping site Landmannahellir. It will take you approx. 1 hour 20 minutes to drive this track. I would recommend driving this road if you are feeling comfortable to drive F roads and have a car that is made for driving roads like this.
F208/F210: This is by far the longest and most difficult road to drive. You start further east at Grafarkirkja close to Kirkjubæjarklaustur. I have only been driving parts of it and would not recommend to drive this road to Landmannalaugar unless this fits perfectly to your plans and you are feeling really comfortable in driving F roads
