Eldheimar is a very special volcano museum built around a house that has been buried in ash during the eruption of Eldfell in 1973. You can virtually walk through the house like it has been abandoned at the night of the 20th of January 1973 when the outbreak began without any warning.
Cameras will allow you to take a look inside the family home and reports of contemporary witnesses are going to make it possible to imagine what it was like to be on Heimaey that night. Furthermore, you can learn everything about the youngest island of the Vestmannaeyjar called Surtsey. Surtsey was formed in a submarine eruption within 5 years in the 1960ies. To protect the island it was declared a nature reserve in 1965 and since 2008 it counts to one of the UNESCO world heritages.
