Challenging 5-6 hour return walk to the summit of an ancient volcano

Further information: Karioi is an extinct stratovolcano in the Waikato region of New Zealand's North Island, with a history reaching back to pre-European times. Spanning back millions of years, Karioi was the earliest and largest of the 6 calcalkalic volcanoes that are scattered across the island. Remnants from this long story can still be seen today, such as Gannet Island, which legend suggests was created when Karewa, husband of Karioi, flirted with her sister, Pirongia, and was cast into the sea by divine forces!
