Gertrude Saddle is an essential stop for experienced trampers wanting to take on Fiordland National Park’s rugged alpine terrain. The rocky route, located in the Milford Road/Milford Sound area, offers a 7 km return journey with 4-6 hours of gentle meandering through stunning alpine vegetation before climbing up towards the saddle. At one point, the route crosses Gertrude Stream which is especially beautiful during rain showers. Peaks from both Milford Sound/Piopiotahi and the valley are visible from the saddle, making this rising track a truly breathtaking experience. Adventurers must stay aware and take caution because hazardous conditions such as wet rocks, snow and ice may create treacherous moments.
