Lake Waikaremoana is a beautiful North Island wilderness escape located in Te Urewera National Park. Surrounded by pristine native forest, the lake was formed some 2,200 years ago during a landslide. It offers plenty of outdoor activities including walking and hiking trails, kayaking, fishing and even camping. There are many hire options available for kayaks or canoes to explore the lake. There are also basic accommodation choices such as cabins and campsites, making this a great getaway destination from nearby Gisborne and Napier.
