If you're looking for a scenic and moderately challenging hike near Truckee, California, the Mt Judah Loop trail is a great option. This approx 5.2-mile loop trail (although it always seems longer to me) takes you through beautiful forests and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and lakes. Getting There: To get to the Mt Judah Loop trailhead, drive west on I-80 from Truckee and take the Soda Springs exit. Turn right on Donner Pass Road and drive for about 2 miles until you reach the Pacific Crest Trailhead at the top of the summit. The Hike: The Mt Judah Loop trail starts at the Pacific Crest Trailhead and follows the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) for about a mile before branching off onto the Mt Judah Loop trail. The couple hundred yards of the hike is relatively easy, as you make your way through the forest. Then the trail starts to climb steadily towards the summit of Mt Judah. The ascent to the summit is the most challenging part of the hike, as the trail becomes steeper and rockier. But the effort is well worth it, as you are rewarded with stunning views of the surrounding mountains and Donner Lake. From the summit of Mt Judah, you can see all the way to Lake Tahoe on a clear day. After enjoying the views from the summit, the trail descends on the other side of the mountain with views of Sugar Bowl Ski Resort. This part of the hike is less strenuous but requires careful footing, as the trail is rocky and uneven. If you time it right, this is one of my favorite hikes for seeing wildflowers.

Tips for the Mt Judah Loop Hike:

  • Start early: The trailhead can get crowded on weekends, so it's best to start the hike early in the morning to avoid the crowds and the heat.

  1. Bring plenty of water: The hike can be challenging, especially on a hot day, so make sure you bring plenty of water and stay hydrated.

  2. Wear sturdy shoes: The trail can be rocky and uneven, so wear sturdy shoes with good traction.

  3. I would suggest bring some trekking or hiking poles.

  4. Pack a lunch: There are plenty of scenic spots along the trail to stop and enjoy a picnic lunch, so pack some snacks and enjoy the views.

  5. Check the weather: The weather in the mountains can be unpredictable, so check the forecast before you go and be prepared for changes in temperature and weather conditions. 7. Bring your camera since this hike is my favorite when the wildflowers are blooming. Have fun out there, Paul
