Flatey Island is an idyllic destination for those seeking serenity and relaxation. Located in Breiðafjörður bay in Northwest Iceland, the island stands out with its flatlands and abundant wildlife. Flatey is one of a cluster of forty small islands, equipped with a dusty road that winds through the old village of brightly painted houses. Visitors are able to explore the vast bird population or take leisurely strolls all around the island. The perfect spot for a summer getaway, Hotel Flatey Birdsong at Flatey Island offers cozy lodging and astounding views. Ferries depart from Stykkishólmur or Brjánslækur and no cars are allowed on the island. The tiniest library in Iceland is located here, behind the beautiful church (do not miss either of those!). Flatey is also the setting of a famous crime novel by Viktor A. Ingólfsson, The Flatey Enigma, from which a movie series was adapted.
