Skálholt Cathedral is a spiritual gem in Iceland! It is the official church of the Bishop of Skálholt (currently Kristján Björnsson) and is located in the historical town of Skáhlot. The church was built between 1956-1963 as a way to commemorate the 900 year milestone of the original diocese of 1056. The interior of the cathedral is stunning, featuring 25 stained glass windows representative of Christian symbolism as well as a 17th century pulpit used by Bishop Brynjólfur Sveinsson in 1650. Excavations carried out on the site before building revealed multiple headstones of former bishops and even one stone coffin with the remains of one bishop. There is certainly something magical about Skálholtsdómkirkja - a must-see for anyone visiting Iceland!
