Helgustaðanáma is an exciting destination for nature lovers and adventurers! Located on the way from Eskifjörður to Vöðlavík, Helgustaðanáma is well known for its historic Iceland spar mine. This natural monument was excavated and used until the first half of the 20th century and it is now strictly protected. The Icelandic spar was used for a while in the construction of microscopes and to condict experiments on the nature of light. Bits of the stone, from the dynamite explosions, can be seen all around, but do not pick them!
