The hike from Beatenberg to Bireflue is one of my favourites whenever I'm in the area. It's a scenic and peaceful route in the Bernese Oberland, offering stunning views over Lake Thun and the surrounding mountains. This lesser-known trail is perfect if you're looking to escape the crowds of the Jungfrauregion and enjoy a quiet hike through forests, meadows, and rocky viewpoints.

The hike from Beatenberg to Bireflue

Starting in Beatenberg, a charming mountain village known for its panoramic views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau, the trail leads gradually uphill through alpine forests. The route is well-marked and takes you along a mix of forest paths and open ridges, revealing breathtaking landscapes at every turn.

After about an hour and a half, you’ll reach Bireflue, a rocky outcrop that offers spectacular views of Lake Thun, Interlaken, and the surrounding mountains. It’s a fantastic spot to take a break, soak in the scenery, and enjoy a packed lunch while overlooking the turquoise waters below.

After climbing the "Bire", you can continue the loop that takes you back to Beatenberg where you started. Otherwise, you can return the same way back to Beatenberg for a rewarding round-trip hike.

How to Get There

Beatenberg is easily accessible by bus from Interlaken. If you're driving, parking is available in Beatenberg near the trailhead.

Seraina’s Tip: The final section of the hike to Bireflue is quite a steep climb up wooden stairs, so make sure to wear sturdy hiking shoes with good grip. The effort is well worth it, as the panoramic views from the top are amazing.
