Castelgrande, the largest and oldest of the three UNESCO-listed castles in Bellinzona, stands as a symbol of the city’s rich medieval heritage. Located on a rocky outcrop at the heart of Bellinzona, this fortress offers stunning views of the town, its neighboring castles, and the surrounding valleys.
Dating back to the 1st century BC, Castelgrande has undergone several transformations over the centuries. Today, it features impressive defensive walls, towers, and a museum that explores the history of the region and the castle’s role in protecting key trade routes through the Alps.
You can explore the castle’s interior, climb its towers, and stroll along its massive walls for panoramic views. The museum, housed within the castle, showcases archaeological finds and exhibitions on Bellinzona’s cultural and historical significance. If you don't want to go inside the castle, you can even walk through its outside area for free.
Castelgrande is easily accessible on foot from Bellinzona’s city center via a short but steep climb or by using an elevator from Piazza del Sole. The site also features a restaurant where you can enjoy a meal with a view.
Seraina’s Tip: Castelgrande is an excellent starting point for exploring all three Bellinzona castles. Take the elevator if you prefer an easier ascent, and don’t miss the chance to walk along the walls for sweeping views of the city and the surrounding mountains.
