Seealpsee is a pristine alpine lake located in the heart of the Appenzell Alps, near the village of Wasserauen. Known for its crystal-clear waters and breathtaking mountain scenery, it’s one of Switzerland’s most picturesque and accessible natural destinations. Which also makes it quite popular and therefore a crowded place on a sunny summer day. But don't let that scare you off. It's well worth a visit...

The lake is reached via a scenic hike from Wasserauen. The walk to Seealpsee takes about 45 minutes to an hour, depending on your pace, and is moderately steep in some sections.

Upon arriving at Seealpsee, you’ll be greeted by its serene beauty. The lake’s calm waters reflect the surrounding mountains, creating picture-perfect views that are popular among photographers and nature enthusiasts. The area around the lake is ideal for picnics, with grassy meadows and shady spots to relax. And don't miss out on going for a refreshing swim!

If you're looking to explore further, trails lead around the lake and into the surrounding hills, offering more perspectives of this stunning alpine setting. The nearby restaurants Berggasthaus Forelle and Berggasthaus Seealpsee provide opportunities to enjoy hearty Swiss meals, including local specialties like rösti and Appenzeller cheese.

Seraina’s Tip: Make your hike from Wasserauen to Seealpsee even more special by stopping at the Seealp to buy some local cheese. My favourite is the fresh goats cheese, paired with a glass of fresh milk.
