Castello di Sasso Corbaro, perched above Bellinzona, is the smallest and youngest of the city’s three UNESCO-listed castles. Built in 1479, it was designed to bolster Bellinzona’s defenses and provides a commanding view over the valley and its sister castles, Castelgrande and Montebello.

Unlike the other two castles, Sasso Corbaro sits detached from the city’s original fortifications. Its elevated position offers sweeping panoramic views of Bellinzona, the Ticino River, and the distant Alps, making it a favorite for photographers and history enthusiasts alike. The castle’s sturdy stone walls, elegant towers, and charming inner courtyard are beautifully preserved, allowing visitors to step back into the region’s medieval past.

Inside, the castle houses small exhibitions on local history and culture, as well as temporary art displays. The serene atmosphere and stunning surroundings make it a peaceful retreat from the bustling city below.
The castle is accessible by car or via a steep walking trail from Bellinzona. Parking is available nearby, and the hike, while challenging, rewards you with spectacular views along the way. Entry is ticketed, and the price includes access to the castle grounds and exhibitions.

Seraina’s Tip: For the best experience, combine your visit to Sasso Corbaro with trips to Castelgrande and Montebello. If you’re driving, park at Sasso Corbaro and walk down to the other castles. The views from this elevated castle are unmatched, especially on clear days, so bring your camera. It’s also an ideal spot for a picnic if you want to take in the scenery at your own pace.
