The hike from Riederalp to Aletschwald offers an unforgettable journey through Switzerland’s UNESCO-listed Jungfrau-Aletsch region. This trail combines stunning alpine landscapes with incredible views of the Aletsch Glacier, Europe’s largest glacier, and a peaceful walk through the ancient Aletschwald forest.

Starting Point: Riederalp

Your adventure begins with a gondola ride from Mörel to Riederalp, a charming car-free village perched high above the Rhône Valley. The ride offers breathtaking views of the valley and surrounding peaks, setting the stage for your hike.

At Riederalp, follow the well-marked trail toward the Villa Cassel, an historic mountain villa that now serves as a visitor center for the Pro Natura Aletsch Center. It’s worth a short stop to learn about the region’s unique ecosystem and conservation efforts.

The Hike to Aletschwald

From Villa Cassel, the trail continues toward the Aletschwald, a protected forest nestled near the edge of the Aletsch Glacier. This section of the hike takes you through rolling alpine meadows, with frequent viewpoints offering awe-inspiring glimpses of the glacier’s immense ice field.

The Aletschwald itself is home to ancient Swiss stone pines and larches, some of which are more than 1,000 years old. Walking through this peaceful forest, you’ll feel a deep connection to the natural history of the Alps. The contrast between the lush greenery and the glistening ice of the glacier makes this hike truly unique.

Optional Extensions

For a longer adventure, you can continue hiking toward Bettmeralp or higher up to other viewpoints along the glacier. The trail network is well-connected, allowing you to customize your route based on time and fitness level.

Seraina's Tip: Take a break at the Pro Natura Aletsch Center near Villa Cassel to learn more about the glacier and its ecosystem. The exhibits provide fascinating context for what you’ll see on the hike, and the nearby viewpoint offers a fantastic first glimpse of the Aletsch Glacier.
