The Creux du Van, located in the Jura Mountains near Neuchâtel, is a breathtaking natural rock formation shaped like a giant amphitheater. This geological marvel, carved over millions of years by glacial and water erosion, boasts 160-meter-high cliffs encircling a vast basin, offering stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes.

The Creux du Van is a paradise for hikers and nature lovers. A popular trail starts from Noiraigue and takes about 4-5 hours to complete a loop around the area. The ascent is challenging but rewarding, leading through forests and meadows before reaching the top of the cliffs. Once there, the views are simply unforgettable, stretching across the Jura Mountains, the Alps, and even as far as France on clear days.

Wildlife enthusiasts will be thrilled by the chance to spot ibex, chamois, and a variety of bird species that inhabit the area. Information panels along the trail provide insights into the region’s unique flora and fauna, making the hike both educational and enjoyable.

At the summit, there’s a small mountain inn, Ferme du Soliat, where you can enjoy local specialties like fondue or a refreshing drink while soaking in the scenery.

Hike from Noiraigue to Creux du Van

The hike to the Creux du Van is a challenging but incredibly rewarding experience, taking you through diverse landscapes before reaching the iconic cliffs. Here’s a detailed guide to the most popular route, starting and ending in Noiraigue:

Starting Point: Noiraigue

The hike begins in the small village of Noiraigue, easily accessible by train or car. From the train station, follow the well-marked signs toward "Creux du Van." The initial section of the trail takes you through the charming Jura landscape, with rolling meadows, dense forests, and occasional glimpses of the surrounding mountains.

The Ascent: Les Oeillons Trail

As you leave the village, the trail gradually becomes steeper. The path known as Les Oeillons is the main ascent route. It zigzags through a serene forest, offering plenty of shade and occasional resting spots. This section is physically demanding, with rocky and uneven terrain, so sturdy footwear is essential.

Reaching the Rim

After about 1.5 to 2 hours of uphill hiking, you’ll emerge from the forest and arrive at the rim of the Creux du Van. The first view of the amphitheater is breathtaking, with sheer cliffs plunging 160 meters into the basin below. Take your time here to soak in the scenery and capture photos.

Exploring the Rim

The hike continues along the edge of the Creux du Van, offering panoramic views at every turn. The trail is well-defined but requires caution, especially near the cliff edges. Wildlife like ibex and chamois can often be seen grazing near the cliffs, so keep your camera ready. This part of the hike is relatively flat, allowing you to enjoy the stunning vistas without much exertion.

Break at Ferme du Soliat

Located near the highest point of the hike, Ferme du Soliat is a perfect spot for a break. This rustic mountain inn serves regional specialties like fondue and charcuterie, and its outdoor terrace provides stunning views of the surrounding Jura landscapes.

The Descent: Via Les Roches Blanches

For the return, follow the path via Les Roches Blanches back to Noiraigue. This trail offers a gentler descent with a mix of forest paths and open terrain. The views remain captivating, and the change in perspective makes the return journey just as enjoyable.

Hike Details

  • Distance: Approximately 14 km (loop)

  • Duration: 4-5 hours

  • Elevation Gain: About 760 meters

  • Difficulty: Moderate to challenging

Seraina’s Tip: Start the hike early in the day to avoid crowds and have time to explore the area at your own pace. Don’t forget to pack layers, as weather conditions can change quickly, especially near the cliffs. The rim trail offers the best views, so make sure your camera or phone is fully charged.
