Best time to go: Morro Bay enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate, characterized by cool, wet winters and dry, temperate summers, which makes Morro Bay a comfortable year-round destination for outdoor activities and enjoying the scenic coastline.. Here’s a breakdown of the seasonal weather:
Spring (March to May): Spring is an excellent time to visit Morro Bay as the weather is mild, with temperatures ranging from the mid-50s to mid 70s°F (15-24°C). The landscape comes alive with wildflowers, and it's a great season for hiking and birdwatching, especially during the Morro Bay Bird Festival in April. Crowds are moderate, making it a peaceful time to explore the area's natural beauty.
Summer (June to August): Summer is the peak tourist season in Morro Bay, with warmer temperatures ranging from the 60s to 80s°F (16-27°C). This season is perfect for beach activities, kayaking, and enjoying the bay's marine life. However, it's also the busiest time, so expect more crowds and higher accommodation rates. The cool coastal breezes make it a great escape from inland heat..
Fall (September to November): Fall offers some of the best weather in Morro Bay, with warm, sunny days and cooler evenings. The crowds begin to thin out after Labor Day, providing a more relaxed atmosphere. It's an ideal time for outdoor activities like hiking and fishing, and the sunsets over Morro Rock are particularly stunning during this season.
Winter (December to February): Winter in Morro Bay is mild, with temperatures ranging from the 40s to 60s°F (4-16ºC). It's the quietest time of year, offering a peaceful retreat with fewer tourists. Although it's the rainy season, there are often clear, crisp days that are perfect for whale watching and exploring the tide pools. Winter is also a great time to see the migrating monarch butterflies in nearby groves.
Each season offers its own unique charm and opportunities to experience the natural beauty of Morro Bay. Our recommendation though, would be some time between late winter and late spring as this will help reduce crowds and peak season pricing and you'll have lush greenery and blooming flowers.
Transportation: Since this is a road trip itinerary, a rental car will be needed. We've compiled this itinerary in a way that would start and finish at one of the major airports listed above, all of which have car rentals available. So this would be our recommendation, but if you would prefer other modes of transportation, feel free!
OVERVIEW
Total mileage: 400-500 miles (640-800km)
Total drive-time: 8-10 hours
Estimated cost: $1,100-$1,800 (This estimate is largely based on the cost of accommodations, rental car, gas and meals. Outside of the accommodations and meals, most of the activities are free or low-cost. The largest factors will be accommodation and Estero Adventures (which you should ABSOLUTELY do). We hand picked these options as we feel they provide the most unique and fun experience. Staying at a campground will significantly decrease your overall cost, but will take away from the overall experience as so many of the downtown locations and activities are walking distance from 456 Embarcadero.
Accommodations
The hotels and accommodations in this itinerary were hand-picked by us. We tried to provide alternative options where possible to offer both family-friendly and pet-friendly options. If our options do not fit your needs, we know there are other options along the route that should fit your needs.
Food & Drinks
We've provided restaurant and cafe locations for each meal of every day. If you stay at 456 Embarcadero, following our itinerary will be the best option. If you opt to stay at one of the campgrounds, and wish to swap out one of the restaurants to do a campsite meal, you are more than welcome to do that! But if you're looking to truly experience Morro Bay and all that it has to offer, than we would strongly recommend trying the local eateries!
