KNOW BEFOREHAND

Nearest Airport: There are actually a few different airports, all within similar driving distances of each other. We'd recommend searching flight info for each one to find the best deal!

San Francisco International Airport (SFO)

San Jose Mineta International Airport (SJC)

Sacramento International Airport (SMF)

Oakland International Airport (OAK)

Best time to go: Mendocino County experiences a varied climate due to its diverse geography, which includes coastal areas, inland valleys, and mountainous regions. Here’s a breakdown of the seasonal weather:

Spring (March to May): Spring in Mendocino County is mild and often marked by blooming wildflowers and lush green landscapes. Temperatures typically range from the mid-50s to mid-70s°F (13-24°C). Rainfall begins to taper off from the wetter winter months, making it a great time for outdoor activities like hiking and exploring the redwood forests.

Summer (June to August): Summer brings warm, dry weather, especially inland. Coastal areas remain cooler due to the Pacific Ocean's influence, with temperatures ranging from the high 50s to mid-70s°F (15-24°C). Inland areas can experience temperatures from the mid-60s to low 90s°F (18-32°C). This is the peak tourist season, ideal for beach activities, festivals, and wine tasting.

Fall (September to November): Fall offers mild and pleasant weather, similar to spring, with temperatures ranging from the mid-50s to mid-70s°F (13-24°C). The region experiences less fog compared to summer, and the vineyards are particularly beautiful during the grape harvest. This season is excellent for outdoor activities and enjoying the vibrant autumn colors.

Winter (December to February): Winter in Mendocino County is cooler and wetter, especially along the coast. Coastal temperatures generally range from the mid-40s to mid-60s°F (7-18°C), while inland areas can experience temperatures from the low 40s to mid-50s°F (5-13°C). Rainfall is more frequent, contributing to the region’s lush landscapes. Despite the cooler weather, winter is a great time for whale watching and enjoying the cozy, quiet ambiance of the coastal towns.

Each season offers its own unique charm and opportunities to experience the natural beauty of Mendocino County. Our recommendation though, would be some time between late winter and late spring as this will help reduce crowds and peak season pricing and you'll have flowing waterfalls, lush greenery and blooming flowers.

Transportation: Since this is a road trip itinerary, a rental car will be needed. We've compiled this itinerary in a way that would start and finish at one of the San Francisco Bay Area airports listed above, all of which have car rentals available. So this would be our recommendation, but if you would prefer other modes of transportation, feel free!

OVERVIEW

Total mileage: 400-500 miles (640-800km)

Total drive-time: 10 hours

Estimated cost: $2,000-$3,500 (This estimate is largely based on the cost of accommodations, rental car, gas and meals. Outside of the accommodations and meals, most of the activities are free or low-cost. The largest factor will be accommodation. We hand picked these options as we feel they provide the most unique and fun experience. Staying at a campground will significantly decrease your overall cost, but will take away from the overall experience.

Accommodations:

The hotels and accommodations in this itinerary were hand-picked by us. We tried to provide alternative options where possible to offer both family-friendly and pet-friendly options. If our options do not fit your needs, we know there are other options along the route that should fit your needs.

Food & Drinks

Most of the accommodations in this itinerary offer food and beverage options of some sort, but we did include some local cafes and restaurants that we felt warranted a visit. There are a couple of days where picking up snacks or food from Mendocino downtown market might be needed.

Day 1

Depending on your arrival time in to the SF Bay Area, how much ground you cover and what you do on the first day, may differ. We've outlined our itinerary in a way that would only have you driving from the airport to the first accommodation on the first day to allow for drive time, check-in and dinner. If you arrive early in the day, and wish to drive up and tackle some of the itineraries activities, you are absolutely welcome to do so!

Depending on which accommodation you choose to stay at, we outlined some options for dinner. That being said, if it is open (check their hours!) we'd having dinner at Fog Eater and staying at Little River Inn.
