The North Ridge to Sunset Loop Trail in Angel Island State Park offers a scenic and moderately challenging hike that showcases the natural beauty and historical significance of the area. This 5.5 mile loop begins at Ayala Cove, where ferries from Tiburon, San Francisco, and Oakland arrive. The trail starts with a steady climb through a shaded eucalyptus forest along the North Ridge Trail. As hikers ascend, they are rewarded with panoramic views of the San Francisco skyline, Alcatraz, and the Golden Gate Bridge. The trail reaches its peak at Mount Livermore, the highest point on Angel Island, offering breathtaking 360-degree views of the Bay Area.

After soaking in the views from Mount Livermore, hikers descend via the Sunset Trail, which provides a more gradual and scenic route down. This trail meanders through diverse landscapes, including grasslands and coastal scrub, and offers expansive views of the Bay and the Marin Headlands. Along the way, hikers can spot local wildlife such as deer and various bird species and explore historical sites, including old military installations and bunkers.

It's important to wear sturdy hiking shoes, bring plenty of water, and use sun protection, especially on warm days. Morning or late afternoon hikes are recommended for cooler temperatures and softer light for photography.

Access: A ferry ride from either Tiburon or San Francisco is required in order to visit Angel Island State Park, which ranges from $15-$18 per person
