To be honest we are personally not big fans of Tamarindo despite its huge popularity. It's one of the most touristy places in Costa Rica, and it doesn't feel authentic. It has many great food and shopping options, though, if that's something you are looking for.

North of Tamarindo, you will find Playa Grande, which is a beautiful long beach and our favorite part of this area. It has great surf, less crowds, cute cafes, etc. If you decide to check out Tamarindo, don't miss Playa Grande or choose to stay there instead.
