Hillsborough Forest Park is nestled in the gorgeous quaint, Georgian village of Royal Hillsborough in County Down.
This 200-acre oasis promises tranquil views of its 150-acres of mixed woodlands, peaceful lakes and gardens, and the impressive 17th-century fort. If you’re a nature-lover you will enjoy exploring the abundance of wildlife and birds, there is also a play park for kids.
The most popular walking trail is the lake walk. The 1.9km loop takes you around the lake in either direction that you choose. On this trail you will most likely spot some of the birds found in the area, including swans and ducks. There is also plenty of seating on the trail where you can have a rest and enjoy the view of the lake.
From the forest park, you can access Hillsborough Fort from the trail. The artillery fortress was built by Colonel Arthur Hill in 1650 and was later remodeled in the 18th century into a tower house. While it’s closed to the public, the gardens and grounds are open so you can take a bit of a look around while you’re there.
📌Be sure to spend time exploring the charming streets of the village of Royal Hillsborough, as well as visit the should-see official royal residence Hillsborough Castle.
🕘The park is open dawn to dusk daily.
🅿️ Free parking at the entrance to the forest, on Park Street . Please keep in mind that it can get pretty crazy on weekends and in summer. Otherwise, you can also park near the fort and access the lake and forest from there.
☕️Stop by Percy’s coffee truck for a coffee and sweet treat. This food van is located in the car park and has plenty of refreshments on offer from coffee to ice cream.
💚 As with any natural area please follow the principles of Leave No Trace, respecting the environment and wildlife.
