The Fort of São Miguel Arcanjo is situated in Nazaré, Leiria District, Portugal and was first constructed in 1577. It stands proudly as a beautiful 16th century structure built on cliffs surrounded by the sea on three sides. The fort underwent several modifications and expansions to better fit its purpose with some of these updates being done at the orders of King John IV who placed an illuminated image of St. Michael the Archangel above the entrance portal. In more recent years, the fort has opened a museum that includes an exhibit about the WWII U-963 submarine, plus a Interpretation Centre dedicated to uncovering the mysteries of the nearby Nazaré Canyon. Visitors come far and wide to admire the fort's architecture as well as take in breathtaking views of the ocean and coastline.
