Kirkjufell is a 463m high hill located on Iceland's Snæfellsnes peninsula, near the town of Grundarfjörður. Known as the most photographed mountain in Iceland, Kirkjufell is not a volcano but a nunatak that emerged above glaciers during the Ice Age. It features volcanic rock and layers of Pleistocene lava and sandstone. The mountain has been a filming location for Game of Thrones and has seen mountaineering fatalities in the past.
