The Ancient Macedonian Theatre of Ohrid is an archaeological wonder! Dating back to 200 BC, this theatre has a perfect location located between two hills which amplifies acoustics and protects from the wind. It was a site built for public performances such as plays, concerts, operas and ballets for the citizens to enjoy. During Roman times, gladiator fights also took place here. Unfortunately, the theatre got buried by the locals after itsDark Ages as it became a symbol of dislike due to its association with the Romans. Fortunately, during the 1980s the theatre was found again during construction work and since then is used for the original purpose: providing entertainment to the community. In recent years, even high-profile shows like those by the Bolshoi and José Carreras take part in the yearly events at the theatre.
