Tsar Samuel's Fortress is an iconic attraction in the beautiful Macedonian city of Ohrid. Built hundreds of years ago, the fortress is a key monument of the region's history and culture. Its walls spread across the 3 kilometer-long Ohrid hill at heights of up to 3 to 16 meters, offering breathtaking views of the city and the lake below. Originally built by King Philip II in the third century BC and later restored and upgraded by Emperor Samuels and Constantine the Great, the fortress has withstood various rulers throughout its lifetime. Visitors can explore the ramparts, towers, Gate ways and Upper Palace, which were created by Dzeladin-Bey in the nineteenth century. The fortress also houses various archaeological sites such as Plaoshnik, Polyconchal Basilica, Early Christian Basilica and Prehistoric Settlement in Bay of Bones. A visit to Tsar Samuel's Fortress promises a fascinating adventure of culture and history.
