The Battle of Mečkin Kamen was an important battle of the Ilinden-Preobrazhenie Uprising against the Ottoman Empire. On 12 August 1903, a small force of around 230 rebel soldiers led by commander Pitu Guli made their last stand against a much larger Ottoman force of more than 2,000. Although around 40 rebels were killed, their selfless courage and bravery in standing up to the vast Ottoman army had a huge impact on inspiring other revolutions in the region. In memory of this battle, a monument now stands at the site of this intense fight for freedom.
