Zao Onsen, a well-known onsen town near Yamagata Station, is especially popular in winter for its excellent ski slopes and the famous Snow Monsters. However, it’s a bit expensive these days especially during snow season so I visited in October and enjoyed the stunning autumn leaves and affordable accommodations, but winter remains the best season to experience the unique scenery and winter sports.
About Zao Onsen
Zao Onsen is a premier mountain resort in Japan, offering top-class ski slopes and soothing hot springs. With over 80 accommodations, including traditional ryokan and modern hotels, visitors can enjoy a range of activities—winter sports, sightseeing, shopping, and dining. It’s easily accessible via Shinkansen, airplanes, or highway buses, making it a perfect mountain retreat for relaxation and adventure.
