Karasawa Cirque is one of the most scenic and accessible hikes in the Northern Japanese Alps—known for its dramatic glacial basin surrounded by towering peaks like Mt. Okuhotaka and Mt. Kitahotaka. The trail starts from Kamikochi, a highland valley famous for its clear rivers and alpine views, and follows the Azusa River deep into the mountains.

I've done this hike twice, and it’s hands down one of the best bang-for-your-buck alpine hikes in Japan. That said—expect crowds, especially on weekends during October’s fall foliage season. If you can swing a weekday visit, do it.

Start/End: Kamikochi Bus Terminal
Duration: 1–2 days
Distance (round-trip): ~32 km
Elevation Gain: ~800 m
Best Season: June–October (snow from November to May)

  • The trail from Kamikochi to Karasawa is long but not technically difficult—a steady, gradual climb until the last 1–2 hours.

  • Most hikers do it over two days, staying overnight at either Karasawa Hyutte or Karasawa Goya. If you're fit and fast, it can be done in a long day, but it's a push (especially with camera stops and crowds).

  • Mountain huts here are well-equipped—hot meals, futons, and all—but they fill up fast in peak season, so book ahead.

  • Crowds: It gets very crowded in October, especially weekends. You’ll see massive lines at the toilets and packed huts. If you’re going for fall colors, aim for weekdays and try to arrive early.

  • Weather: From November to May, the route is under snow and requires full winter gear and experience. Best time is mid-June to mid-October.

  • Gear: Trail runners or light hiking boots are fine for most of the season. Bring layers—it can still be cold at the top, even in summer.
