Auckland’s youngest volcano, Rangitoto Island is located in the harbour, an iconic conical volcano in the city skyline. There are several walking tracks on the island which pass through native bush, lava caves and dramatic lava fields. From the summit of Rangitoto Island, you can see spectacular panoramic views of the Hauraki Gulf and back towards the Auckland city skyline.

Catch a ferry from downtown Auckland, or opt for a kayaking tour departing from Mission Bay. Get your ferry tickets at the link below.

Remember: Rangitoto is a pest-free island, and nature reserve.

Personal tip: There are several different tracks to choose from on the island - my favourite is the quarter-loop-track. Head west from the ferry terminal along the coastline towards Rangitoto Lighthouse and Mackenzie Bay, then walk to the summit. Then descend from the summit via the lava caves, back to the ferry terminal. This 12km loop will take approx 3.5 hours.

Pronunciation: Rangitoto: raa-ngee-tor-tor

Hauraki: hoe-raa-kee
