Lake Tekapo (Takapō) is renowned around the globe for its vivid turquoise waters, framed by the Southern Alps. It is also located in a Dark Sky Reserve, renowned for its exceptional stargazing conditions. In early summer (late Nov - early Dec), the shores of the lake are covered in pink and purple lupine flowers. Although these are a pest species in New Zealand, they are a beautiful sight to see and a popular photography location.

Aside from taking in the beautiful scenery and night sky, there are other attractions and tours in Lake Tekapo, including the Church of the Good Shepherd, star gazing tours, Tekapo Springs and Mt St John Observatory. (Details to be added shortly.)

Remember: There are a few popular photo locations along the lakefront. Be courteous to other visitors and do not ‘hog’ that ‘insta-spot’ for too long! Note that while they are pretty, lupins are also an invasive species and they can damage our native ecosystems.

Personal tip: The lupin season varies from year to year, but planning your visit around the last week or November or first week of December gives you the best chance at seeing the blooms. Follow Godley Peaks Road or Lilybank Road up the side of Lake Tekapo to capture the flower fields. Other locations to see lupins include Lake Pūkaki, the Lindis Valley or road to Milford Sound.
