The Sealy Tarns walk is located in Aoraki National Park and is an incredible half-day walk. The short, but steep ascent gives you jaw-dropping views up the Hooker Valley, towards Mt Cook and the surrounding glaciers and mountains all around you. Chances are you might hear or see the cheeky kea alpine parrots flying overhead - or even get an up-close encounter!

The track is well marked ascending through native bush and rocky terrain, with 2,200 steps taking you up to the freshwater lakes at Sealy Tarns. The track is approx 3 hours return.

Remember: Be prepared for all weather. The track is quite exposed to the elements, sunny in summer or windy in winter. You may require ice axes and crampons during winter.

Personal tip: Get up for sunrise! It is pure magic witnessing the first light on the mountains. This is also when the kea are active and you’ll increase your chances at seeing them during the early hours of the morning, before they fly higher into the mountains for the rest of the day!

Pronunciation: Aoraki - ow-raa-kee
