Kaiate Falls, also called Te Rerekawau Falls are a local's secret located just outside Tauranga. Just as you think you’ve seen it all, the track approaches another stunning viewpoint - the definition of “chasing waterfalls.” In the summer months, this is a popular swimming hole and picnic spot for locals. From the carpark, you will also have beautiful views towards the Tauranga coast.

There is a short walking track that takes approximately 20 minutes each way. The trail has several viewpoints to see a ravine where the Kaiate stream drops over rocky bluffs in a series of nine cascades. The main track leads to the top of the waterfall, and follows the stream to the base of the cascades. It then continues to the lower falls, which have a large plunge pool and swimming hole.

Remember: The carpark can get busy over the summer months, so it is recommended to avoid midday peak times to secure a spot. It’s also a good idea to check the water quality before swimming, as there is a history of health warnings due to high bacteria levels in the stream.

Personal tip: My top tip for visiting any waterfall is to do so after a period of rain. It is also awesome to visit off peak, when the crowds are gone, so that it feels like you have this natural wonder all to yourself!

Pronunciation: Kaiate - kai-aa-teh

Te Rerekawau: teh reh-reh-kaa-woe
